HOLISM

INTRODUCTION

From the moment of the initial spark that gives us the gift of life, we work unstintingly through all its countless and inexhaustible events. Each one, a mirage, an unavoidable fragment of a definite unfathomable reality.

And, we hold to our fragment and defend it even at all costs.

What if we were able to glimpse other realities and also realize that they, too, have been constructed with effort beginning with feelings quite like our own? And what if behind that feeling there were basic satisfactions or dissatisfactions that are held in common by absolutely every human being?

A huge diversity of realities would, then, combine into an overarching similarity of needs.

It is just this that we are dealing with when I explain to myself human development, healthy or ill, abled or disabled, based on an interactional theory of primary needs and a simultaneously systemic, dynamic, transdimensional approach, trying to find common factors among different understandings I grasp over time.

Thus, to think and act in pedagogy and medicine, in psychotherapy and social action, I chose a comprehensive and integral paradigm: holism.
